The energy market is a dynamic arena where precision and strategy determine success. Following the Forecasting team’s deep dive into their cutting-edge methodologies for predicting renewable energy production and demand, we, the Flex Optimization team, take the baton to deliver actionable results. Our job? To optimize the dispatch of assets and actively trade in spot or day-ahead markets, ensuring energy flows efficiently, cost-effectively, and sustainably.

Bridge the gap between forecasts and the real-time market, together

Our work begins where the Forecasting team’s ends. They provide us with highly detailed predictions for wind and solar energy generation, alongside demand forecasts. Armed with this data, our first task is to determine the net position by balancing expected supply and demand. This involves deciding whether we need to buy or sell energy in the market to ensure stability and profitability. Within this environment, we develop forecasting products with which we provide traders with valuable information.
Flex Optimization is powered by a  dynamic group of traders and data scientists. Together, we bridge the gap between forecasts and the real-time market, using advanced analytics and trading strategies to respond to ever-changing conditions. Our primary focus lies in the Netherlands and Belgium, with additional activities in Germany and the UK.

Our energy traders deal in energy produced by third parties as well as assets operated by Eneco. They need to know as accurately as possible how much energy will be produced in the short and long term, as this information is a key input for risk management and the further development of an optimum trading strategy that balances supply and demand. Providing that information is where my colleagues and I come in.
The spot market is where energy is bought and sold day ahead of delivery. Here, we actively trade based on the latest forecasts and market conditions to optimize portfolio performance. Our agility in responding to fluctuations in wind or solar output helps maximize returns while maintaining system reliability.

Grid stability

Beyond trading, we play a critical role in maintaining grid stability. Through services like Frequency Containment Reserve (FCR), Automatic Frequency Restoration Reserve (aFRR), and Manual Frequency Restoration Reserve (mFRR), we collaborate with grid operators to balance the system. This requires precise coordination and real-time decision-making, as these obligations are vital to preventing power disruptions.

A major part of our work involves optimizing the dispatch of a diverse portfolio of assets. From Combined Cycle Gas Turbines (CCGTs) and Combined Heat and Power plants (CHPs) that provide both electricity and heat, to electric boilers, batteries, and residential demand response programs, every asset is dispatched with precision. Even agricultural and greenhouse farmers are part of our portfolio, reflecting our commitment to integrating diverse energy sources.
We also manage curtailment for wind and solar parks. When market prices drop below zero, curtailment becomes essential to prevent financial losses while ensuring grid stability. This process is particularly crucial in today’s energy landscape, where renewable energy sources dominate but remain variable.

Our wind and solar parks  contribute to balancing the grid by leveraging passive imbalance steering strategies. This approach minimizes imbalances and promotes the seamless integration of renewables into the energy system. As grid congestion becomes an increasing challenge, we actively participate in congestion management initiatives. These efforts ensure that energy can flow where it’s needed most, without overloading the network.

Driving efficiency, reliability, and sustainability every day

Flex Optimization is where technology, trading, and teamwork converge. Every decision we make reflects a deep understanding of market dynamics, asset capabilities, and the overarching goal of a sustainable energy future. By collaborating closely with the Forecasting team and leveraging our expertise, we ensure that Eneco stays ahead in a competitive and rapidly evolving industry.

As the energy market continues to evolve, our commitment to innovation and optimization remains steadfast. Whether it’s through advanced trading strategies, cutting-edge technologies, or seamless teamwork, the Flex Optimization team is proud to be driving efficiency, reliability, and sustainability every day.

Together, we’re not just balancing the grid—we’re shaping the future of energy.
''By seamlessly integrating forecasting, trading, and technology, we’re not just optimizing energy – we’re building a sustainable, reliable future.''
